"We call him Mr B." In praise of the Lagler Hummel

I had never thought of myself as a nerd until i bought a brand new Lagler Hummel.
I found myself in the middle of the night staring at “Mr B”, garden shed door open as he glistened green in the moonlight.
( Btw Hummel means bumblebee in German )
Employees were threatened with fines if they so much as nicked the machine and were forced to apologise, not to me….But To It!
I have since calmed down a bit .
But let me explain a little about the machine and shed some light on my obsession.

For any self respecting floor sanding contractor probably the most important machine in his arsenal is the belt sanding machine. This is the heavyweight sander that is used to flatten and prepare the floors for the finishing machines. Sometimes a finishing machine is all that is necessary but usually where there is unevenness or an old varnish that needs removing, the belt sander is the machine for the job.
However not all belt sanders are created equal and the undisputed king is the Lagler Hummel.

Incredibly the Hummel has changed little from Eugene Lagler’s original design.
(It’s first production run was in1969!)
But don’t be fooled by its retro almost art deco appearance which i happen to love.
The Hummel’s technical abilities remain unsurpassed.

So what the makes the Hummel top of it’s class?
Well Its a supremely functional and well balanced machine .
It’s uniquely patented sanding drum is slightly tapered creating a very even sanding line.
Lagler have cleverly done away with unnecessary bells and whistles and concentrated on ease of maintenance and functionality.
Still made in the family factory in Germany to their exacting standards, its the most important thing in my life…..Well the 8th.
